Our second spike in the Coronados was amazing. We worked in burnout area the had a major fire in 2005, and ended up each day looking like coal miners because we were covered in black ash. It was a wonderful spike--we were in a wilderness area, which means mechanized tools are not allowed, so we used crosscuts, axes, pulaskis, and double bits instead of chainsaws. It was a blast! Exhausting, but a total blast. Also, we were 5 miles backcountry with a 3000ft elevation gain, which meant we had a brutal hike in and out with all of our gear and tools. Luckily, we didn't have to hike in water--rather, we filtered from a spring that dripped out of a rock face. Definitely an epic spike.
